In a recent post, we discussed the nature of working with clients to create their kid’s rooms. Unlike the nursery, which is often a direct reflection of a parent’s general aesthetic, kids rooms tend to be more of a hybrid of tastes and therefore a completely different animal! Although parents often take the lead on things like bedding, larger pieces of furniture, paint and wallpaper, we still find it important to incorporate some elements that speak to the child’s interests. To do this, we like to add in some kid-friendly accessories to ensure that space is one that the child in question will enjoy and relate to. Here are some of our favourites at the moment from our preferred vendors…
West Elm
Like so many other large retailers, West Elm has come out with a Baby & Kids collection that we’ve come to adore. For mirrors we love their Cloud Fringed Mirror to add texture and whimsy to a room. Storage baskets are incredibly useful in both nurseries and kids rooms alike and these Metallic Woven baskets just feel a little more special but are still child friendly. As an alternative to prints, it’s fun to add three-dimensional pieces to the walls. These papier mache animal heads feel modern and sculptural but fun and friendly enough for a child’s room. Plus, in the white version, they’re incredibly gender neutral and could look really fabulous while popping out of a wall painted in a deep hue or papered with an elaborate pattern. West Coast Kids
West Coast Kids is a vendor we work with regularly, as they have a wide selection of nursery and toddler pieces that feel fresh and stylish. Shelving is one of those items in any room that more often than not ends up being a painfully utilitarian afterthought. From toys to books and a whole lot in between, kids these days tend to have a lot of stuff. To store all these things, shelves are often a necessity but this cactus bookcase proves that storage need not be a bore! Also at WCK, Oyoy has come out with this adorably chic collection of rattan toddler-sized furniture and for a large, plush friend, we love this giraffe by Melissa & Doug. Pottery Barn Kids
Pottery Barn has been a long-time staple for kids and baby furniture and for good reason. Season after season they come out with great pieces that tug at the heartstrings of adults and intrigue little ones. For an aesthetic that feels urban and cool, this “Hug Life” LED Wall Light caught our eye as something that both parent and child would love. Their industrial pinboard is a piece that is incredibly functional for hanging your toddler’s art work but also adds a definite vibe to their room. For cozy little reading nooks, Pottery Barn has a broad selection of these sherpa- upholstered “anywhere chairs.” We’re particularly fond of this charcoal version that can be customized.
