Date

As the evenings become increasingly nippy and twinkly lights are unravelled in store windows, we start to see our social calendars filling up with festive soirées and social gatherings to mark the holiday season. There’s much to look forward to on such occasions; getting ready in glitzy ensembles, catching up with friends, making new friends and sipping on beverages that are only acceptable at this time of year such as Glögg and eggnog. But in order to make it back onto the guest list next year, there are certain things one must do. A coveted bottle of vintage wine or a little bubbly always makes for a nice gift but sometimes certain occasions warrant a little something more. The hostess gift is something that we take great pride in and feel that it deserves a little consideration. Here’s what we’ll be gifting to our hosts and hostesses this season…

Something for the Bar…

Luxury barware is something that we often admire but rarely purchase for ourselves. The holiday season is an appropriate time to give the gift of a good drink, as it will likely see lots of use and makes a lovely accompaniment to whatever bottle you’re already gifting. There are countless options available but we’re partial to this charming golden pineapple cocktail shaker from Williams Sonoma. As the pineapple has long been thought of as a symbol of hospitality, welcoming and warmth, this little shaker is the a perfectly themed hostess gift.

Something for the Coffee Table…

Similar to accessories for the bar, it’s rare to go out and buy yourself a coffee table book. If you happen to know your host’s or hostess’s passions or interests, a coffee table book may just be the perfect choice. Naturally, we tend to lean towards more design-focused coffee table books and have the latest Rose Uniacke At Home book on our wish list (hint, hint)!

Something for the Kitchen…

Whether your gracious host or hostess is a regular Martha Stewart or not, chances are they will love the tantalizing, confectionary colours of Le Creuset. Whether it’s in the form of a set of multi-coloured espresso cups, a French oven in their favourite hue or a simple set of salt and pepper mills, we find that most people love a little Le Creuset in their kitchen, even if it’s just for show.

Something Cozy…

For lazy days in the cooler months, there is nothing quite like curling up on the sofa under a soft throw. For both warmth and style, we find it’s never a bad idea to give the gift of a cozy and luxurious throw. On the higher end of the spectrum, Hermes’ throws are a classic choice that will never go out of style but if this is far more than you wish to spend, opt for throw in a stunning colour or print that is constructed of a high-end, natural fibre like cashmere.

Something Fragrant…

If none of the aforementioned suggestions appeal, we are always partial to something fragrant be it a candle or a diffuser. We generally opt for something with a vessel that is as lovely as the fragrance itself. Jonathan Addler’s candles and diffusers are particularly wonderful, as they can serve as vases long after the fragrance has run its course.
